Ian Clifford — founder of Toronto-based, Zenn Motors — has taken a lead role in the production of Canadian electric cars. The Zenn — or Zero-Emission-No-Noise car — is a 100% electric vehicle that travels at a regulated maximum speed of 40 km/hr — and can travel about 60 kilometers on a single charge.
It has an energy consumption equivalent to 245 mpg — and is 80% recharged in only 4 hours. Using a ZENN instead of a conventional car could eliminate over 6 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.
The car uses a plug that fits into a regular wall socket and each charge adds only about 35 cents to the average electricity bill.
But, even though the car is for sale in over 40 US States, bureaucratic hurdles continue to prevent its approval for sale in Canada.
At $14,000 - the Zenn could be exactly what Enviro-conscious consumers have been looking for.
Recently, Al Gore lent his support to the company. Hopefully, legislation will change so that these cars can be sold in Canada.

Today we are going to show you part number REJ2000 this is an electric push button car jack from Roadmaster. Couple of quick specs on this unit is it has a 2000 pound lift capacity. It is also easy to use you set it underneath the car and plug it into your cigarette lighter and then push the button and it will raise your car up. Pretty easy. It has the minimal of 4 inches and raises up to 14 inches. The power cord it self is around 9 and a half feet long. It also includes a really nice storage and carrying case for the jack itself. Plus there is also a mini flashlight it comes with you can use if you are in the dark. This nice carrying case fits nicely in the trunk so it can be packed for a road trip. Lets go ahead and show you how this unit works.
We will go ahead and demonstrate using this car here. Slide it underneath the car right under a frame member or weld edge on the bottom of the car. Your owners manual will show you exactly where to put the jack. We are going to go ahead and attach it to our power supply. It is normally the cigarette lighter or power outlet. At this point be at a safe distance when you push your button and let the jack do all the work. Now your tire is ready to be removed. Japans Mitsubishi Motors has just unveiled its new i-MiEV electric car. The vehicle is priced at just over 47,000 U.S. dollars, less than other rival electric cars but still a hefty price compared to popular hybrid combined gas-electric vehicles.
Plug it in, charge it up and drive it away. The new age of EVs, or electric vehicles, has come along and Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors hopes the new I-MiEV will energize the otherwise slow electric car business.
Mass production has already begun with over 2,000 on order. With Mitsubishi Motors’ president saying output will hit 30,000 over the next few years.
The president is also sending a strong message that electric cars are not only more economic to run, but also have less effects on the environment.
[Osamu Masuko, President, Mistubishi Motors]:
“We believe that EVs are the ultimate solution to atmospheric pollution, global warming and the end of oil. Introducing the 100 percent - electric i-MiEV onto the market will both test the pinnacle of current technology and lead the way to a new era.”
The I-MiEV, which gets 160 kilometers on a 30-minute quick charge, will be sold at about $47,600 U.S. dollars.
The I-MiEV takes about seven hours to charge on a 200-volt outlet, and will soon be ready to roll onto roads in both Japan and abroad.

He was tall, looked fit in his spandex bicycling gear and — the reason we were a bit nervous — he was glaring at the little silver roadster with distaste. Had we inadvertently forced him off the road on one of our passes while photographing the electric-powered 2008 Tesla Roadster? No. His problem, it turns out, is that the car is “too quiet.” The Tesla, clean and silent but for the hiss of tires on asphalt and the whine of the electric motor’s cooling fan, disturbed him because he didn’t hear it coming as we scooted by him on a twisty section of Skyline Boulevard in the mountains above Tesla’s headquarters in San Carlos, California.
