But we are still f ucked…. Oil Co’s rule the world…
EPIC FAIL.
Who killed the electric car?? Help please?!?!?
I need to find out two suspects and why the killed them? I have to write a essay about it?
Thank you, thank you!
I did watch the movie, but i still don’t get it. Bc i missed the first day when we watched the movie.
Not who, What? No cost effective technology at this time. Don’t believe the that greedy companies or executives killed it to keep selling gasoline powered cars or oil. The very fact that they accuse someone or something of being greedy makes their argument contradictory. Greedy means they want to get all they can no matter what. So they could care less whether they sell oil, gas powered cars, electric cars, electricity, batteries. A greedy person sells what is most profitable. They don’t care what. Not very many people want an electric car as they are today, price inclusive.
Why did GM KILLED the ELECTRIC CAR back in 1999?
Whatta shame, Thousands could have kept their good paying American jobs and GM would be loughing all the way to the bank. Thanks in advance.
The GM EV1 electric car that you are asking about was not put into production for many reasons. The produced several hand built cars and leased them to the public as a way of testing the current state of technology. What they found was that despite pouring HUGE amounts of money into the program, the cars would never be acceptable to the car buying public as a replacement for gas powered vehicles. These reasons included:
- Lack of range. Several hours of charging would often get less than 100 miles of driving.
- Batteries were very heavy and weight was a performance hindrance. Therefore the rest of the car had to be built with less amenities and thin, cheap feeling lightweight materials.
- Electrical issues. It has been said that the complex electronics required for these cars to run caused several fires.
The bottom line is that a pure battery powered car is still not feasible today. The drawbacks to range (miles between charges), comfort and convenience, and performance are still to great even for someone trading out of the junkiest econobox.
Watch ‘Who Killed the Electric Car" on YouTube (9 parts). It’s an eye opener.?
I was very surprised when I watched this. It posed some very interesting questions on why we don’t have some of the alternate vehicles we should have.
While there are vast amounts of propaganda on both sides of this issue, and I feel that this particular movie falls into the same category as "An Inconvenient Truth" and "The Davinci Code," I must say that I fall on the side of the people who made this movie.
While I think the theatrics are a little overboard, the simple fact is that the car cannot have possibly failed to meet safety standards, as the car itself was safe enough to put on the roads. In the U.S., once a car is approved for the roads, it is approved forever. You cannot revoke it’s status as a safe car, no matter what exemptions it may have had.
As far as GM losing money, well, the money was lost. It is gone. You now have the opportunity to recoup a small portion of that by selling these cars to the people who want them and eliminating the problem. They could have even sold the rights to sell spare parts to a third party and gotton that excuse off their backs as well.
Once the money was spent, and the cars were made, it makes no sense to just take them back and destroy them, unless their was an underlying issue with the cars that was not published, such as they tend to randomly drive themselves into a river or something. My Father used to own a Celebrity when they first came out, and the transmission was junk. They fixed it on the next model year, but would not retrofit my Dad’s car as that involved replacing additional parts that had not failed. They simply replaced transmissions (4 in all) until the warranty ran out. This car was by no means safe, yet GM was more than happy to dump that model year onto the public to get rid of them.
So why did they crush the EV1 despite the fact that a small number of people really wanted to buy theirs? Simply, they did not want to have the electric car become popular enough to have to design a new model. Someone at the GM plant in Ohio also told me that they cars simply did not wear out, and the cash cow that is spare parts did not exist for this car. Who knows what is really true, but the excuses about the car being a continuing drain on GM after production just does not fly for me.
Has anyone seen "Who Killed The Electric Car?" If so, what did you think?
I think it played for about a day where I live, and I missed it. I’m waiting for it to be released on DVD.
i saw it because i thought it would be interesting and figured that by having famous actors, well it would be cool, i thought it was okay, the emphasis is there for u to think about what businesses are doing to keep themselves alive and without caring about the damaging that their choices might have on the environment
would you recomend the film "who killed the electric- car?" to your peers why or why not defend your point
YES! It was an excellent film and it really made it’s points. The film shows you many behind the scene or not very well documented things, that really open your eyes. Especially how the republicans put the brakes on everything. This one is a real **** 4 stars. Good Luck!
Who killed the Electric Car in California?????? Your thoughts!!!!?
They took brand new Electric Cars and ground them up into a MILLION Pieces…. Could it have been the oil and auto industry or the Bush Administration??????? You must be the change you wish to see in the World…………..
Hell YES it was the corrupt gov. establishment, fueled by the oil and auto industry….
They had the electric car THIRTY years ago,
people are STILL brainwashed into believing that the technology ’still has to be perfected’,
it’s a sad fking joke.
…and I’ll take heavy metals isolated in soil rather than carbon emissions going out into the atmosphere and oil spills clogging our oceans,
Gee, I wonder why asthma is at epidemic proportions in only the last thirty years.
why is the Tesla Roadster the only electric car made for people who actually like cars?
all the rest are tiny, odd-looking and very very slow, as well as having very limited range.
No i haven’t seen ‘who killed the electric car’
Batteries…….
The roadster uses several hundred Lithium Ion batteries that are very expensive– which added to the Tesla’s expense. Also, it is engineered with many one-off parts and made with expensive carbon fiber components which are unrealistic in terms of mass production.
Remember, mass production is the key to bringing low cost products to the masses.
Other electric vehicles use heavier, less efficient, LESS EXPENSIVE batteries. They are cheap to manufacture and are cheap to put in electric vehicles when compared to the laptop batteries in the Tesla.
If it was inexpensive to make the Tesla Roadster, and could be manufactured at a reasonable cost…….by all means, it would be marketed on every other TV commercial. The fact is, at this time, it isn’t.
The electric vehicles that ARE relatively inexpensive to make, don’t have the range. Remember—the EV1 was a VERY expensive vehicle to make, and GM paid millions to manufacture the limited run. GM would have had to charge very high prices to sell them to make a profit.
Everything boils down to money. If it doesn’t make money, it won’t happen. If it does make money…….electric vehicles will be in driveways.
