I’m planning on purchasing a used car. I have a budget of £2000, I don’t want to spend much more. I’m going to view a car tomorrow from a dealership. It’s an 02 Renault Clio priced at £2295. Here’s the spec; 3 Doors, 45,000 miles, ABS, Body coloured bumpers, Central locking, Cloth seat trim, Drivers airbag, Front electric windows, Full size spare wheel, PAS, Passenger airbag, Rear wiper, Side airbags, Solid Paint, Fully H.P.I Verified, 12 mths MOT, Sales Service, Comprehensive Warranty. My question is… Do you think this is a good buy, and what do I need to look for? Im planning offering £2000 cash…Thanks!
hawksy, I’ve always purchased an auto warranty for every car I’ve owned in the last 5 years. I used to get them from the dealer, but lately it’s cheaper to get them from an aftermarket company that specializes in warranties. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Warranty-Quote.html They offer free quotes, so it’s easy to see how much one would cost for your automobile.
I’m buying a used car…?
Tesla - Lotus?
Why has there been no UK media coverage of the Tesla, www.tesla.com, being built by Lotus, Norfolk; and why is it not for sale in UK where petrol is much more expensive than California
first UK report: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/inbusiness/inbusiness.shtml
Why did "top gear" race a jet dragster when there is a professional British team with an electric car that should do 350-400 mph http://www.speedace.info/bluebird_electric_3.htm
I answered this one once already unless i forgot to press submit.
Its a tax thing . the government takes more money from petrol than electricity so would prefer to keep it quiet its like the cigarettes issue
Car trouble with today’s economy, what should i do?
I have a 1994 Dodge intrepid, and I make no payments on it, all i pay for it is insurance and gas. I am a high school student making $7 an hour and i hardly get 15 hours a week, when i try and push every shift for an extra hour or so.. Every shift I try to stay as late as possible, and im always picking up shifts for co-workers, and with all that work, I still only end up with at most $230 for two weeks. I pay for my own basic necessities (food, clothes, personal hygiene products, etc) while I am also trying to save money for a good laptop before I go to college, and I plan to move out of the house in about a year (by then I will get to work more since I wont be in school)
Until recently my intrepid has done what it needed to do.
here is what is wrong with my car
-extremely loose tie rods
-grommets missing
-in need of an alignment
-new fuses for my horn/radio
-new battery (corroded)
-new belts (they’re really badly cracked & frayed)
-the brake fluid is at 100ppm when it is required to be at at at least 200ppm
-really really really really loose steering
-has been over 50,000 on the same shocks & struts
-exhaust system leaking
-engine fluid leaks
-slow leak in RF tire
-need two more tires (^^ including above)
My sister was the one that had the car before me, and didn’t do preventive maintenance on it at all, and only changed the oil when it absolutely needed it, instead of after ever 3,000 miles.
The cost to replace the tie rods & get a new grommet would cost me $436.61 (mainly because of the time it would take to replace it)
That does NOT include the other replacements that are obviously needed. and.. clearly, i cannot afford this sort of maintenance until after about two months. I have a cell phone bill, insurance, and basic necessities to pay for first, so that is why it would take me that long (at the very least).. and i cant go without it, and I made an agreement with my parents that i would take care of everything myself aside from rent/gas/electric/water once I got a job, and I absolutely refuse to ask my parents to help, because I would have to pay them back, and I don’t know how long that would take me, and I hate the feeling of owing someone money, I have always been very good with paying people back because of that. I hate it! Also, Especially with how the economy is going, I want to be able to learn on my own how to deal with saving money without asking others for help, I want to do this on my own!
Now, that you know that ^^ here are the choices.
- I can either, take advantage of all the specials that car dealerships are presenting because they are desperate for sales, and get a much newer car that would only need maintenance checks and oil changes for a while, or - spend another 1,000 on the car I have now. After graduation in December.. I graduate early, ( I am guaranteed a waitress job for day shift) I can make enough to pay from the job i have now for the basic needs, and then my serving job to pay off the car within a reasonable amount of time.
I was looking at getting either some sort of KIA or an 05-07 chevy cobalt
Which, in the long run, do you think would be a smarter choice?(what would save me the most money, I plan on keep this car, whichever it turns out to be, for a very long time)
If you say keep my current car, what ways can i go about saving money on the costs, and how could i get it done in a faster process
If you say go with getting a newer car, What car would be best for me? I need something cheap, but obviously more reliable than my 14-year-old dodge. Also, it needs to have good gas mileage!
Thank you so much for all of your answers!!
the tie rods need replaced right away. thats a major safty issue. leaky engine is lower on the list. just make sure to check and top off the fluids. I get so angry with car dealer and mechanics. Some are good but a lot rip people off. My advice to you is this. either but a maintenance manual for your car, and do serious research on the internet and learn to fix your car yourself, which is how i learned to do all the work on my car, or find a friend who knows abotu this stuff and see if you can get him/her to help you for the cost of parts and a couple pizzas. if you buy another car, i would get a toyota or honda, they are the most reliable in my opinion, stay away from kia, hyundia, and ford. also, make sure to check www.craigslist.com for your area and the classifieds in the paper, because you can almost always get better deals when buying from an individual instead of a dealer. also, if you finance the car, be cause what interest rate they give you, don’t get a loan for more than 8% apr. goign to school you will get enough loans, you don’t need to be paying off a car too at an impossible high interest rate

Can name brands be mixed in electric panel?
When I was ordering AFCI sales person asked me what brand of panel box I have (its happens to be Cutler-Hammer) I ask him why and he told my that I cannot use different brand AFCI in my box: “its like buying parts for the car” he said. WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT?????? I mix mach breakers before!!!
All answers so far, so good. There is one thing to consider.
Fire.
All breakers and panels have metal in them. Stamped on this metal are the name brand of each and every separate item inside that panel. You pay insurance to cover you in case of fire.
The insurance company PAYS an "adjuster" to come out and inspect the "damage" of the fire. While he is looking at the damage, he is also looking for ANYTHING that his company can (and will) use to keep from paying you.
One of the most overlooked items in a fire is the metal parts inside said panel. If the breakers are not "UL Approved for the purpose", there is their way out.
Murray breakers will fit in a Cutler-Hammer "BR" style panel, however they are NOT "UL Approved" for that same panel.
Get my drift.

solar power car?
Where can you purchase these solar/electric cars? I hear and see talk about them but never one for sale.
—
You can indeed drive a solar car. You need an electric car, and a solar panel to charge it. Here’s how to find an electric vehicle conversion for as little as $5000:
*
http://squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car
*
Conversions are normal cars that have been converted to electricity. This is the kind of electric car I drive. They can be found inexpensively, they do freeway speeds, and look like normal cars. You never see these for sale because our culture does not seem to value this technology - so cars like this are built by small entrepreneurs, and sold by word of mouth, or on the internet.
*
You can also save money on solar panels by buying used ones. I would look for something at least 200 watts, so plan on spending about $1000. Here’s a page about used solar panels:
*
http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_solar.html
*
Don’t try to mount this on your car - it’s too big. Put it on your garage instead, and charge when you’re parked.
*
You probably won’t be able to get all your driving electricity from the sun, but don’t worry. Grid electricity is still lots cheaper than gas. It costs me only a penny or two per mile in electricity cost to drive around. With a solar panel, you might be able to drive for almost ZERO. It’s pretty hard to beat that!
