An electric car accelerates for 8.0 s by drawing energy from its 305 V battery pack. During this time, 1340 C of charge pass through the battery pack. Find the minimum horsepower rating of the car.
From the problem we know that a total of 1340 Coulombs of charge leave the battery pack in 8 seconds, and are used to power the electric motor. The current flow, i, is defined as the charge flow per unit time (with standard units of Coulombs per second or Amps) so we can calculate i as 1340 Coulombs/8 seconds for a current flow of 167.5 Amps.
Next, the electrical power consumed by the motor can be calculated as P=I*V where I is the current flow that we just calculated and V is the Voltage provided by the battery pack. This power ends up being 167.5 Amps*305 Volts=51,087.5 Watts (or equivalently Joules per second). This is the electrical power used by the motor to propel the car forward.
Finally, we can use a conversion between hp and Watts where there are 746 Watts/1 horsepower. This gives us the power required of the motor=51,087.5 Watts*1hp/746 Watts for a horsepower requirement of 68.4819 horsepower.

water4gas and a few other websites claim they have found the answer on how to run a car with water by making your own small reactor that converts the water into brown gas does this really work without out any other fuel supplement? If it does is there enough energy coming out to run your car and produce enough electric to continue the conversion or is it all a myth?
Here we go again, can’t and won’t work, all they are doing is taking electrical power from the alternator to break water in to hydrogen and oxygen.
Brown gas is a mix of hydrogen and oxygen, but I’ve seen it called HHO, or they claim to break down hydrogen-oxide, Dihydrogen monoxide or DHMO, hydroxic acid or hydroxylic acid, or as I like to call it water. You get less energy out then you put in. IT’S been TESTED and IT DOESN’T WORK! Every time this device is tested it fails badly.
I could go into why it can’t work and will if you wish, but just think about this, even if you believe the auto manufacturing companies are in bed with big oil, why hasn’t say India put it on their cars, or Japan and country that imports ALL it’s oil jumped on this? Or did big oil get to them too? You mean to tell me big oil got to every country that makes cars and they all sold out, come on, if really helped you’d see them on cars right now, the car companies have to make the CAFÉ numbers.
This is just a con to part you from your money.

Assuming your engine is in perfect tune, you get about 20%-to 37% the energy you put into it back as work, you lose about 7% to friction and the rest is lost in the cooling system and exhaust. Now assuming your alternator is 55% efficient, and let do the math.
Gasoline has a BTU of 18,000 per pound.
So now we have 18,000 BTU to play with, assuming we have a very efficient engine we start with 18,000 times your engine efficiency so 18000 x 37% we now have 6660 Btu then assuming we have an alternator that is 55% efficient our 6660 now becomes 3663 BTU. So to break EVEN that 3663 BTU must produce 18,000 BTU of hydrogen, and to increase your fuel mileage it MUST make more.
I know they told you the alternator is wasting electricity, it isn’t, when you don’t need as much electricity your alternator doesn’t put it out and thus doesn’t use as much power from the engine. But there is NO way for 3663 BTUs to make 18000 BTU if it could you would be making more power then you use

There are a lot of web sites that will sell you plans for a hydrogen generator (electrolizer) . Many of these plans are fine for kids science fair projects but produce very little hydrogen. Some of these devises look like a mayonnaise jar with wires coming out of the top with old forks for electrodes, and recommend using baking soda for an electrolyte…. Not something I recommend to attach to your vehicle!
I have a car and a small truck using supplemental hydrogen, both are healthy and get better mileage.
There are several companies selling good working systems on the web, Stay away from buying plans as many plans are available for free on the web.
If you are handy consider buying a kit, I recommend a finished unit.
Do some research, if a device doesn’t make at least 1.25 ?L/Min or they won’t state the production, move on to something else. Also space is a big problem under the hood of most cars, check the space avalable under the hood! Most devices need about the same space as a large box of cereal.

Not sure if you’re willing to do it your self, but I’d be willing to walk you step by step threw the conversion. I’ve converted 3 of my own cars (a datsun truck, ford ban, and a vw bug) and a few for neighbors. I’ve also converted cars to run on hydrogen, ethanol and biodiesel, by far EV is the easiest.
If you’re interested here’s what it would entitle…
- The engine compartment is first cleaned out of any gasoline components.
- Electric components are then installed in exchange.
- A battery bank is built and incorporated.
- Existing starter and driving systems are connected.
- Turn the key, step on the gas pedal sending more energy to the electric motor, & thus more power to the drive system, which in return creates more speed, more acceleration.
- The system has normal automotive top speeds and acceleration, typical to the vehicle your modifying. If your top speed was 85 mph and your acceleration was 1 mile per min, then this will be what your left with after the conversion.
The methods are extremely simple, making the process possible for anyone, everyone, ANYWHERE.
Typical tools, hardware & supplies are used, making access to parts available for all.
Electric Conversions can be easily accomplished in ANY model vehicle, even tractors, Generators, types of machinery, etc.
Project lengths range from 1 day to 1 month.

I know you cannot make a perpetual motion machine. At least not yet. But if you have an electric car, could running high output alternators off the drive wheels at least increase the range of the vehicle? I figure running the alternator directly off the electric motor would probably be useless, but running it off a drive wheel shouldn’t add as much drag to the electric motor itself.
I ask because I’m contemplating an electric conversion for one of my old VW Bugs, but by the looks of it most people running them seem to be getting about 60 miles at best from a charge. I drive about 70 miles a day round trip to work on the freeway so I need a bit more range than what I’m seeing. BTW from what I’ve read I need to run at the least a 96v system to keep decent freeway speeds if that matters.

The drag of the generator is probably a negative output, unless you can engage it when traveling down hill and gain the energy from gravity. A solar panel mounted to the roof might get you a bit, but probable not enough to matter. You might want to increase the electrical storage (battery) capacity and simply charge longer when idle. I applaud the idea !!! I wanted an electric Ranger, but they were simply not affordable in 2002 when I bought mine. Love to tell Exxon-mobile where to shove it!! Good luck

Electric-in,electric storage and electric use means an all electric car. I see this word-’hybrid’ applied wrongly, in to many ways,among the media. I see how hybrid might describe an all electric if a solar panel,mounted on the car, contributes to it’s effectiveness.What I don’t see is how a wind/solar fed power grid gives an all-electric plug-in car hybrid status. Seams to me that toyota and honda really want to confuse us on the matter to limit thier losses in an all-electric conversion. To think that these two powerhouses have little influence, in this reguard, is a serious mistake .
I understand the current gasoline/electric japanese offerings; do you understand a pure electric offering such as made by Tesla motors? You really need to understand what hybrid infers.
Both Toyota and Honda are coming out with plug-in hybrids. as well as GM is soon,
They are all hybrids that have plug-in capacity so that you can run the first 40 miles as an electric plug-in, but once the battery reaches 30% charge, and fuel powered generator kicks in and you can get extra miles running as a hybrid.
So basically what you are getting is a hybrid with the ability to plug-in for the first 40 miles.
