David’s Electric Car Blog

I bought a used car from a person and I am having some real issues….?

I bought a used car from a individual 10 days ago for $700, I gave him $500 up front with the agreement to pay the additional $200 within a week. Within 3 days, I had uncovered an electric window that didn’t work, a bad battery and the car kept stalling and sometimes shuts off when driving. None of these issues were told to me at the time of sale. The seller told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car at all. It has been 10 days and I have paid over $100 in miscellaneous problems and the car still is not running good. I am putting it in the shop in the morning to have it checked out completely for problems. Should I pay the remaining $200 or what options do I have?
I already have the title and sent in to the DOR. I did sign an agreement to pay the additional $200 but all the money exchanged was cash. I don’t want to renig on our agreement but I am upset about all the extra costs in such a short time.

Well you are finding out why you should buy a car from a dealer. Is your agreement in writting? do you have the title to the car already?. Can you give them back the car? In todays market $700 is not a lot to spend on a car that even does not run. I would expect a car in that price range to have some problems. After all if the car was perfect why would they be selling it in the first place?? Maybe the ash tray was full?? Did you ask them why they were selling the car?
Unless they have something in writting from you saying that you still owe them money or if they still have the title to the car I would not pay them. With out know all the details its hard to advise. Like I said if you bought a 700 car and it starts, stops, goes foward and backwards consider yourself lucky. A power window motor is not all that serious. How long was the car sitting?? If itn was sitting a while and run with the gas that was in it that could be part of the issue. Gas when left to sit for a while can turn to varnish. Maybe there was nothing wrong with it when they took it off the road. Cars not stored properly can be a nightmare.

Can you buy a pure electric car?

I was wondering if the electric car was really dead. Can you purshase an electric vehicle (not a hybrid)?
I watched the documentary "how killed the eletric car?" and was just wondering about it, since the technology cleary exists; Is there a way to get an electric car anywhere in the world?

Sure you can buy them but they are either a) not all that good or b) pretty darn good and very expensive.

The documentary was rather lop-sided and didn’t explain that electric cars still suffer from short battery life for everyday driving.

You can buy an electric car right now at www.zapworld.com, but you’ll need maybe $75,000 for a "real car".

biofuel or electric cars, which is most likely to take over?

What is more likely to happen, a new fuel is found are/or different ways of producing it and piston engined cars are powered by this better fuel similar to the way it is now or electric cars? Obviously both are going to happen but which is going to completely take over the auto industry in the future? This is excluding possibility of hybrids.
If electric cars take over whats going to happen to mechanics? And everything I’ve been learning for years will be like a waste if electric cars become the norm so I’m really worried about this.

Electric cars still need tire changes, lube jobs, sometimes battery changes, etc. And drivers will still get into fender-benders. Mechanics will still have work to do. I wouldn’t worry.

You simply have to improvise, adapt and overcome, as they say in the Marine Corps. :-)

EDITED TO ADD for the poster below worried about "toxic heavy metals" in electric car batteries: Future electric car batteries (such as the Chevy Volt) will be Lithium Ion. Lithium is the lightest metal on the periodic table of elements, not a toxic heavy metal (such as lead, which is used in LEAD-ACID BATTERIES OF CURRENT REGULAR CARS).

Is Pres. Obama a car salesman?

What’s with Pres. Obama? Does he think Im going to buy one of those little electric/hybrid/toy cars? What makes he or his administration think THEY know how to make a car? Let alone sell the country on buying one? Where is the manufacturing experience from his staff? Once I find out the background of his ‘Car Czar’ staff, Ill let ya’ll know. Just who are these CLOWNS in charge?

Those cars look like a good wind could pick it up and toss it to Australia.

All these Eco-Whacko Liberals are too extreme for me.

He is now…

What actions can be taken to solve this problem?

GM and Chrysler are losing billion of dollars. I already know they are making electric cars, but what else could they do to increase their sales?

File Chapter 11, restructure, produce fuel efficient vehicles

What is the most your electric bill has been?

I live in an area that is pretty shaded and my electric bill in my 2 bedroom apartment for this month was $313 and that is ridiculous. I know it was a bit higher because the kids were home for the summer, but that is a car note.
maybe it helps to let you guys know I live in Texas and for the last 30 days it has been 100 or more.

First off, I would ask to have your electric meter checked. Has your E. bill been consistently high and/or have you lived in this same apartment long enough to see a pattern to your bills? I believe there is an agency that can do energy evaluations and possibly could determine where the loss of power is going. This might need to be done by the building owner, but should be to benefit all. Let us know what you learn about this extremely high bill and the causes.

automatic trans in electric car?

why can’t you use an automatic transmission in the electric car conversion kits

The only reason that I could think of is that the transmission is shifted by vacuum from the engine, and an electric motor does not create a vacuum, how ever you should be able the shift it manually, but you would have to tighten the salvo to not down shift.

If you could, would you convert your car to electric?

This is not a question about morality.

Let us say that you could turn ANY vehicle into an electric vehicle. That, naturally would be somewhat costly. What would play with the costs would be the driving range per charge, horsepower and battery type.

For example, a heavy van could use less expensive but heavier batteries, while a sports car, would need the lightest thus more expensive batteries.

If you could, would you convert your vehicle? And if so, what would you want like in horsepower and range. And at what price?

Please post all details. Thanks. ; )

if i could i wouldn’t even have a car at all, but i live in a rural area and have to have one. i would love to be able to walk to a train station from my house and be at work without driving. I think the problem is getting people to NOT drive at all. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Which is the best electric golf cart ? Easy go or club car?

I asked that very question to a golf cart mechanic and he said that the Club Car is better than the E-Z-Go cart in every way possible. He said the E-Z-Go’s are more or less disposable; however, the Club Car is well built and will last a lifetime.

This past weekend I played at one of my area’s nicer courses and they had electric Yamaha’s. It felt rock solid. I actually liked it better than the Club Car.
