I’ve seen the Tesla Roadster for maybe over 2 years now and when someone was telling me that there are no viable electric cars I pointed it out to them. Then they attempted to make fun of me by saying that it must go about 40 miles and has a top speed of 30 mph. I was dumbfounded at the fact that they made themselves look stupid but I had to simply show them the web site and the people who actually own them in order to save them the embarrassment. What is the big fear? Why are people afraid to embrace that we live in the future? Tesla is not the only electric car company either. You’ve got Phoenix and a bunch of others and the costs of these vehicles is comparable to any performance car of its kind. In some cases the electric carf simply outshines the gas-powered one which is equivalent on nothing except maybe the way it looks from the outside, but otherwise inferior in every way.
I don't know, but it's infuriating. No matter how good these electric cars get, people complain. I think they just can't stand the fact that it's far less damaging to the environment. Or that if people buy EV's then somehow the "greenie liberals win" or something
Current EV technology can get up to 220 miles per charge and do 130 mph. I think if you cut that in half that would be ideal for most city drivers. But no, it's not fast enough, it's not far enough. I think even if cars did 200mph and got over 1000 miles to the charge people would find a reason to complain. If you're only going to drive 30 miles a day, 40 tops then you don't NEED to get 600 miles to the charge anyway.
Plus the batteries are recyclable and can be replaced or even changed for BETTER batteries. Repair costs are 1/10th the amount
If people started vowing not to buy another car until they can buy an affordable 100% electric car would you make the same commitment? Imagine, filling your car up for less then $5.00 of electricity at home (or completely free with solar panels on your home). People are already doing it! Never going to the gas station again. And no longer being controlled by the oil companies.
heeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllno.
one…if you're green enough to buy a car that runs solely on electricity, and live close enough to your job to make a successful roundtrip commute with the limited range of an all electric car, just frickin take your bike! good for you and the environment and i wont have to deal with you clogging up the highway barely getting up to the speed limit.
two…the idea of electric cars is the biggest joke on environmentalists everywhere. kudos if you can charge your car with your own solar cell, but for everyone else, guess where all that energy comes from? FOSSILE FUELS! and with everyone driving an all-electric car, electric companies could wipe their asses with the profits
I have a hand-cranked scissor one, but looking to buy electric: http://www.amazon.com/12V-DC-Electric-Car-Jack/dp/B000G2MHE4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1245214490&sr=8-1 what do you think?
My Jack prefers to be called Nigel….
With the emphasis on saving money with not spending as much on gas…any idea how much electricity these electric cars will be eating up to charge.
Electric vehicles cost approximately 2 cents per mile to charge. In comparison, a gas burning car which gets 30 mpg costs 10 cents per mile to charge if gas costs $3/gallon.
Little kids on my street drive their electric ride-on cars up and down the street . It makes a lot of the neighbours very nervous but the parents, who are nice people, just ignore any comments about it not being very safe. I don't want to make enemies by phoning the police but I'll feel pretty horrible if something happens and I didn't call.
Does anyone know the law? These kids also play on the street and in the ditches alongside the street. If a car swerved to avoid a dog pr something and ended up in the ditch they'd be killed!
What do you advise?
Yes, call the local authorities who will talk to the persons responsible for this unsafe activity. If you don't report it, those children may be injured or killed by an unaware driver!
You would be doing a public service by reporting it.
Actually we're looking before that year. Jay Leno has a restored 1909 Baker Electric. The Baker Motor Vehicle company ran from 1898 to 1914.
According to Jay Leno's Garage the first US made electric was in 1891. He also reports that the first electric car was built in Scotland in the late 1830s.
No car was for sale by a major automobile company from then until 2002 when Toyota sold a few RAV4-EV. All other cars were leased and eventually destroyed. There were a couple of small companies that tried like Sebring Vanguard maker of the Citicar.
Specifically, I'm looking for a 3 FM 10 battery. I have been through pages of US websites, but only one ships to Canada, for $55 for a $11 battery.
Have you tried Toys R Us?
I built my own electric car. I converted a Geo Tracker to electric. I chose this particular vehicle because of its light weight. You don’t get blueprints, pe se, but wiring diagrams. EVParts.com supplies the motors and controllers, and they also have complete kits, but their kits are kind of pricey. Basically, you have to make an adapter plate to connect the electric motor to the transmission, and a second adapter to bolt the flywheel to the motor shaft. You can have these made by a local machine shop for $200 or so. There are many options and trade-offs to consider, from the selection of motors and controller to the batteries.
Here is a video I made when I was first testing it, using plug power - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NbVooQfbp8. It now has batteries and is running great. Also see my Web site at http://www.electronautomotive.com.
Write if I can help.

Remove it if you must but the golf cart isn't the safest vehicle to be driving at full speed. There is little protection, people have fallen out of carts while taking curves. Many injuries have been serious, a couple resulting in death. The governor was installed for safety reasons. You want to disengage it? That will be your problem.
